Representation of Artists

Depending on the type of music genre the magazine is depends on the way the artist is represented. For instance pop artists can be associated with flirtatious acts and revealing clothes in part of playing a role in their music video like Katy Perry’s Roar music video is located in the jungle and this is what she's dressed for, in a skimpy revealing leopard print Bikini top and grass skirt. Similar to Lady Gaga’s telephone music video whereby she's in a prison with yellow “do not cross” tape over her body to cover areas. Again this isn't entirely appropriate for the media however is used to gain more custom by watching and downloading the music. Alternatively music like country is associated with casual country clothing of checked shirts and boots with calming settings and atmosphere. Unlike rock which is associated with dark colours, sharpest terming and heavy props.

In this magazine cover Adele is the front cover artist and is portrayed in hidden position of not directly facing the camera however her eyes are still direct. The positioning of her creates effect especially with the air on her hair creating a blowing effect. Her makeup is made heavy, dark and defined to define her features and emphasise her serious look by looking directly at the audience, yet not facing them, with a serious facial expression and hand positioning making a sexy flirtatious look.

Hair & Make-up
Her hair has been blown by either a fan or hair dryer that we cannot see to create the blown hair look effect. This effect can create a sense of fun, movement, interest and sensuality. It is commonly used with longer hair and can emphasise the different highlights in the model’s hair to make them more striking. It is often associated with an erotic look especially when the facial expressive is serious. The subtext says how “Adele blows us away” which resembles the hair blown look.
Her make-up makes her appear very white and clear skinned making her stand out and quite vibrant despite the background being a similar colour, her hair and the use of red on the front cover allows her skin to glow. The makeup used is similar to some people’s everyday makeup routine with dark and defined eyes which draws attention to her eyes, highlighting the colour of her irises. The length of the eyelashes also portrays a significant bold beautiful look that is often desired by many. Her lipstick is a natural pink looking colour to complement her pale skin tone. Likewise with her eyebrows the colour complements the different shades of her hair creating a subtle tone throughout making her skin significant and the red company logo stand out.

Body Language
The body language we can see is Adele being side on to the camera with her right hand up against her mouth. Not directly facing the camera can imply timidity or uncertainty. However it can also indicate self-consciousness and anxiousness, or a sensual attractive look. Because this is on a magazine cover it is likely to be used for effect and emphasis of the beauty and attractiveness of the model for the purpose of the magazine issue nevertheless it could symbolise the way the model has felt or feels currently in which an article in the magazine explores this. The use of the body being turned away with the head turned slightly to face the camera to allow her eyes to give direct address signifies the power of her eyes in which the reader is drawn in because the model is made dominant.

Facial Expression
Adele’s facial expression is neither happy nor sad but has a more powerful look by having direct eye address and slightly parted lips. The open wide eyes defined by makeup can create a seductive look which again attracts attention. The seriousness of her face can indicate a commanding and dominant look.

Lighting
The lighting is bright and clear, making Adele’s skin look vibrant and pure portraying a flawless and unblemished appearance. This style of lighting can indicate how the type of magazine is not dark and gloomy like heavy rock music but instead a refined clean modern look. Radiance is created through plain light colours from both the skin and background in which the lighting shows. Lighting can affect the mood and temper portrayed as a low-key lighting is associated with dark and gloominess whereas high-key lighting is associated with happiness and positivity. The lighting on the magazine cover is all high-key with few shadows to ensure that the cover is bright and content to engage readers.

Shots
The shot taken and used is a close up of Adele to solely focus heavily on her face, hair and hand position. This adds emphasis to the scene because she has been made full to give all attention on her. The angle is at eye level so that the model is looking directly at you as a reader, which can imply that you have equal power or sexual tension to attract readers.
